Governor Signs Budget that does NOT include a Recreation Tax on Golf!!
Sales Tax on Golf will NOT be imposed!
(August 8, 2009)
North Carolina Governor Beverly Purdue signed a new state budget on Friday August 7 that did NOT include a sales tax on golf! Many people within the golf industry were concerned that this tax would have a detrimental effect on the health of the golf industry during a very challenging economic climate when leisure activities are such as golf are purely discretionary spend items. The golf industry rallied, initiating a communications strategy that included an effort to educate both elected officials and the general public on the economic impact of golf in North Carolina. The strategy included a very intensive fax, email and phone campaign from everyone within the golf industry to show that "Golf Keeps Us Going" in ways many people never consider.
Congratulations to everyone in the golf industry that participated in this effort to show the impact of golf in our state!!
We are very happy with the results of this effort and the golf industry intends to continue the work with our elected officials to strengthen the relationship between golf and our legislators. We know there are many ways that we can improve the health of golf and grow the positive contribution the industry makes to the North Carolina economy!
WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE COMMUNICATIONS EFFORT TO OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO SEND A SINCERE "THANKS" TO EVERYONE YOU CONTACTED.

WHAT IS NEXT? The potential of a sales tax on golf served as a real wake-up call for the golf industry in North Carolina. Fortunately, we were able to mobilize and communicate our message to our elected officials in a positive manner. There are a number of issues that the golf industry will be facing in the near future, and this experience has shown that we need to be pro-active in our efforts to work with state legislators in order to strengthen Golf and the contributions the industry makes to our economy.
Current initiatives will impact water use regulations, pesticide usage, property tax valuations and other key areas that will directly impact the profitability of golf courses across the state. It is quite possible that a sales tax on golf will resurface in future budget considerations as well. Therefore, the golf industry is working to implement an on-going communications strategy that will allow us to best represent the interests of golf AND the state in general as we move forward. You can be a part of this important effort!
